The implementation of PIXAPP standards will have significant benefits in four key areas.

  • The development of cost-effective processes for assembly and packaging (e.g. a standard passive fibre packaging process), which is especially important when scaling from prototypes to Pilot manufacture and beyond.
  • Reducing material costs and supporting large scale manufacture through strengthening of the material supply chain by developing standard processes and using standardised materials and components.
  • Generating standard designs and generic packages based on standard processes and materials for different application classes.
  • Standardising assembly equipment (e.g. standard fibre pick-up and gripper tools) around standard processes, materials and packages.

A key feature of the PIXAPP’s approach is the use of standard packaging processes and PDRs (packaging design rules). This enables all Pilot Line partners and external users to implement a coherent packaging strategy.

The ‘standards’ approach also provides users with the ability to design PICs that can be more easily packaged, and allows clear pricing plans to be set, allowing users to costs and scheduling more effectively.
